Country: Kingdom of Thailand (formerly Siam)
Capital: Bangkok

Known for:

The land of smiles. Beautiful beaches, great food, cheap everything, loads of tourists and a large expat community and lots of pretty girls.

Good overview guides of Thailand

http://www.travelfish.org/trips7day.php - A nice concise overview of Thailand, Laos and Cambodia.

Statistical Information

CIA Website

Travel Warnings:

The far south of Thailand has terrorist activity issues and travel to the far southern provinces of Thailand should be well researched and plenty of caution is advised.
Things To See In Thailand

Thailand can be a strange place for a tourist who has not been there before. Here are some of the things to expect in a visit to Thailand.

Extremely bad dancing

Even worse dress sense.

Girls with features of guys... and girls that are actually guys... and sometimes better looking than the real ones.

People driving scooters on the wrong side of the road.

Phuket - Patong Visa Run To Kawthaung, Myanmar (Burma) Via Ranong

Visa runs from Patong are provided by a few companies.

There was one company offering a big double decker bus, but that looked like too much hard work to figure out where the stops were. Also, my next visa run choice was nearly over the road from my accommodation.

I used the Yorkshire Inn visa run service from Soi Sansabai (Soi across the road from Bang La at the boxing stadium end). This cost me 1400 baht and was in a luxury minibus. The bus did turn out to be a nice new Toyota minibus, although I think it had sports suspension installed, or maybe no suspension? The 1400 baht includes your Myanmar visa fee, a boat ride from Ranong, Thailand to Kawthaung, Myanmar and a bottle of water with a meal when you get back to the van after being awarded your nice new Thailand visa immigration stamp. The bus leaves at 8am, but they ask you to arrive at 7:50am.

Ko Pha-Ngan - Full Moon Parties and Backpacker Central

Ko Pha-Ngan is one of the major party locations for backpackers in Thailand.

Ko Pha-Ngan is small island near other popular islands of Thailand such as Ko Tao and Ko Samui as well as the Ang Thong National Park. It is famous for the full moon parties that resemble a rave, full of glow sticks and dubious substances. If you want to attend one of these, things get pretty busy, so arrange accommodation up front.

From what people have told me, it sounds like a place that isn't for everyone. I had a friend that described Ko Pha-Ngan in rather deragotory terms. It sounds like a bit of a dump. His room also got broken into and many of his valuables were stolen, including his passport.

Thailand - Cambodia Visa Run - Pattaya/Bangkok - Siem Reap/Phnom Penh

Thailand is such a nice place, but they only give me a 1 month visa for free. Since I was planning on staying longer than that, I needed to go on an infamous visa run.

For those not up with the visa run terminology, it basically means exiting the country you are currently in (Thailand) with plans to return shortly there after with a new visa. In Thailand a tourist visa is not extendable past the one month provided. This means you really do have to leave the country or start paying fines when you finally do decide to leave. In Thailand I believe a fee is imposed for each day you go over your visa end date.
